Understanding the Law of Vibration

“I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Have you ever heard this expression before? Or maybe, “Seeing is believing”? Our eyes are extremely useful tools for helping us to gather information, but there are plenty of things that affect us every day that we CANNOT see.

Like what, you ask?

Well, like vibrations.

Vibration is movement. Very often you can see something vibrate, like the string of an instrument while it is being played. If you look closely, you might see the string get kind of blurry from moving back and forth at a high rate of speed. But there is even more happening that you cannot see. The vibration of the string (which is visible) makes the air around it vibrate (which is invisible), which makes your eardrum vibrate (again, invisible), and your brain translates that vibration into sound. You can’t see it, but the whole reason you can hear is because of vibration.

Have you ever seen or heard of a theremin? It’s an instrument that uses vibration to make sound. Actually, ALL instruments use vibrations to make sound (that’s how sound works, remember?), but with a theremin, you don’t even touch the instrument. Instead, you use your hands to manipulate the vibrations, which changes the sound.

Watch a video of a theremin HERE

Amazing to watch, isn’t it? The explanation of how a theremin works is equally fascinating.

Video: How it works

But what does a theremin have to do with your thoughts?

A lot more than you might think.

All things vibrate. We know that all matter is made up of tiny particles so small that we cannot see them. These particles are called atoms, and atoms move constantly. So even if you are sitting completely still, because you are made of atoms, you are really moving–a lot!

Here is the interesting part: even non-tangible things vibrate. Something intangible, like a tone or a note, has a specific vibration or frequency.

Other intangible things, like thoughts and feelings, also have a specific vibration.

How to Create a Vacuum When You Don’t Have Control over the Vacuum

Here’s a conversation I had with one of my Mindset Mastery students that you might find interesting. She writes…

Dear Leslie, I am taking your Mindset Mastery Online Course, and I love it! I find I do best working in spurts, but right now, I have another issue.  I’ve been studying all of the laws, and the fact that “nature abhors a vacuum” has really resonated with me.  Even in the past, I’ve found myself getting rid of things so something better can replace them.

I’d love your advice on how to create a vacuum with my house, however.  My husband doesn’t read your material, or hold the same beliefs I do, but I still feel I can have that “rare kind of faith” in my life and have it positively affect me and others.  My husband doesn’t want to put the house on the market, even though I thought that would be the best way to create a vacuum for a new house.  I know putting it on the market can’t be the only way to manifest a new house–the house I truly desire–so, do you have any suggestions?  I’ve visualized the new house many times, and continue to do so and believe and get very excited about it, I’m just not sure where to go from here.  I’m even packing some things so they’ll be easier to move when the time comes.

Thank you so much for all you do–your advice and perspective have given me hope in places I had none.  I’m certain Heavenly Father guided my path so that I would find you.

My reply:

Sounds like you’re on the right track. You don’t need to create a vacuum every time you set a goal – that’s just one way of going about it, and in this case, I’d recommend you take the gentler approach to preserve the relationship. Use the vacuum law for goals and objectives that don’t threaten other family members’ sense of security. Use it for the more personal goals, at least until your husband is on board. You can still get into a house with the other principles (transmutation, vibration). Not all principles need to be utilized for every goal. Different goals and different situations will call for the application of different corresponding laws and principles. Hope this helps… 🙂 Leslie

It does help–thank you, Leslie!  Even as I sent the e-mail, it occurred to me that maybe it was easier for me to just “get rid of things,” and wait for something new to show up (because I had the “believing” part down) than to apply some of the other laws.  Your reply brings clarity and reassurance–thank you for taking the time to send it.

The Power of Relativity

“I cried because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet.” ~Ancient Proverb

Have you ever been around one of those people who is an eternal optimist? The kind of person who, after you have just vented to them about some rotten thing that has happened to you, comes up with a reason that it’s really a good thing?

Isn’t it irritating? 😉

Actually, it’s all about perspective. What that eternal optimist knows is that “good” or “bad” depends on how you look at it.

The Law of Relativity states that any given circumstance is neither good nor bad, it just is. Good or bad is a meaning that we attach to the circumstance, based on our thoughts.

And we can change our thoughts…

No matter how bad our circumstances may be, we can always find someone who has things worse than we do.  Understanding that it could always be worse can help us to remain grateful in hard times. The more frequently we practice gratitude for the things we have, the happier we are.  The Law of Relativity, however, is about more than just putting a positive spin on our hard times. The power in the Law of Relativity comes as we begin to see our setbacks as blessings.

Watch what happens when a girl who was told to never say “can’t” takes that advice to heart…

The “invisible” part of Perpetual Transmutation

“The only thing that is constant is change.” ~Heraclitus

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation states that all things are in a constant state of change. Perpetual means ongoing; transmutation means change. All things are constantly changing into or out of form.

For instance, every person living on the earth started as a couple of cells. As soon as those two cells were joined, the changes began. Rapidly. Constantly. Until a fully-formed human baby was ready to be born.

But that was not the end of the changing. Babies grow. Not as fast as they grew in their mothers’ wombs, but very quickly, usually doubling their birth weight by the time they are 5 months old. Children continue to grow and develop until they reach the prime of adulthood, at which point they start to show signs of aging. The process of coming into full form is over, and the process of going out of form has begun.

As human beings come into or go out of form, there are some stages that we can identify that are associated with each:

Coming into form:

  • All the changes involved in fetal development; the forming of body parts
  • Birth
  • Growth spurts
  • Learning to crawl, walk, eat, talk, etc.

Going out of form:

  • Wrinkles
  • Get shorter
  • Health problems/degenerative disease
  • Pain
  • Loss of vision, hearing
  • Memory loss

The most important part of coming into form is the part that cannot be seen. According to the example above, that would be the part that happens before a baby experiences birth. Without the part that happens before birth, there would be no baby at all.

Understanding the “invisible” part of perpetual transmutation is the key to harnessing its power in our lives.

“And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. For I, the Lord God, created all things, of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I, the Lord God, had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth. And I, the Lord God, had created all the children of men; and not yet a man to till the ground; for in heaven created I them; and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air; And I, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth, the first man also; nevertheless, all things were before created; but spiritually were they created and made according to my word.” (Moses 3:5, 7 emphasis added)

Principle: All things were created spiritually before they were created physically.

What is a spiritual creation?

All things were created with unseen material (an idea or a plan) before they were created with seen, tangible material.

Let’s use a house as an example. Before a house is created with tangible bricks and boards, it is first created spiritually, as an idea. The first expression of that idea is likely a blueprint. While the blueprint is made with tangible materials (paper, pencil), it is not a house. It is a stage in the process of creating the house–part of the spiritual creation. It is a representation of the actual home that is not yet in existence.

Spiritual creation is the process by which an idea is moved through the planning and creating phases until it is fully formed. It is the process of turning an idea into, for instance, a house. A general listing of the steps of the creation process for a house might include:

  • ideas about room placement and features
  • creating sketches of the house
  • drafting a plan complete with precise measurements
  • the purchasing of land and materials
  • construction of the physical structure
  • painting
  • decorating
  • finishing work
  • landscaping

Not every idea moves through the entire process. Many ideas become fully developed, but many others are abandoned, and the full manifestation of that goal is never realized.

The water cycle gives us clues as to how the whole process works…

Speeding up the Prosperity Process

As described in Hidden Treasures, the seventh law is the Law of Gender/Gestation. In a nutshell, it states that every seed in nature has a specific and finite gestation period before it reaches maturity.

Our dream-seeds also have a finite gestation period, and must be held with belief, and nourished until they have sprouted and reached full maturity. Just because a farmer sees a green tomato, that doesn’t mean his red-tomato-dream is a failure. The process just simply isn’t complete yet.

So when your goal or dream doesn’t appear to be all that you hoped it would be, don’t yank it from it’s place in your mind; keep nourishing it. The process just simply isn’t complete. It takes time for the necessary connections to occur. There are a lot of elements that must gather through natural processes before the dream can go from seed, to fruit-bearing tree.

Well, one thing that occupied most of my free-thought time a few years ago was gardening. I had never slowed down long enough to tackle such a feat, but for some reason this was my newest consuming passion: to plant and see seeds grow and turn into vegetables, and to let my children join me in this learning process. Hoping perhaps that when the peas, beans, lettuce, broccoli and so forth began to show up, the children would be all the more excited to ingest them. 🙂

Since we didn’t really want to pull out our rock landscaping, and since I didn’t relish the thought of keeping our basset hound out of the garden, we decided to put it on our balcony in boxes using the “Square Foot Gardening” method.

Now, I have a history of letting even philodendrons die, so when I found Mel Bartholemew’s book and began to read, I gained some confidence and thought I’d better take action in a hurry before the feeling of “I can” turned into, “what were you thinking?”

Tip: Never let an “I feel like I can” moment go by without taking action!

That day’s task was to pick up the Vermiculite from the nursery and begin assembling the lumber. For a moment, I began to lose that “I can” feeling so I went to Trevan’s office to talk it through. I began to explain why I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. It all seemed so simple the day before, but that day I was looking at the charts in the back of the book and went into “information overload”.

There was a chart that showed when I should plant each type of seed, and whether it should be planted as a seed or as an already-sprouted plant. Another chart offered a planting schedule for continuous harvest crops.

But the charts that made my head spin the most were the charts that outlined in detail how well a seed would do in different temperatures.

I explained this to Trevan looking for a little sympathy, essentially communicating: “See honey, do you see how hard this is??”

But when I mentioned the germination charts his eyes lit up, and he said, “You mean to tell me that the germination time for each seed can shorten at higher temperatures?! I mean, I thought so, but I have never known of this to be the case with real-life physical seeds in nature!”

It was at that moment that I knew there would be no sympathy for me at this moment, for he was actually grateful for my troubles, because without them, he would not have just discovered an amazing truth about dream-seeds, too.

Sigh. Okay then. Time to pull myself together and also glean some benefit from this challenge. So I considered his epiphany and had to agree with him.

See, if a principle is true, it will be true at all levels, and in all circumstances: micro as well as macro. We have already seen the parallels between seeds in nature planted in the earth, and dream-seeds planted in the mind.

In this case, we learn that the gestation period for our dream-seeds (though finite and determined by law), can actually be shortened depending on the intensity of energy we bring to it.

According to the chart, a spinach seed, for example, will take 63 days to sprout at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but only 6 days at 86 degrees. More energy shortens the length of germination.

WARNING:

While it is true that the seed can sprout in only 6 days at a high temperature, only 32% of the seeds will sprout at that temperature. If allowed to germinate over 63 days at 32 degrees, 83% of the seeds will sprout.

The best production actually occurs somewhere in the middle. At 41 degrees, the spinach crop yields the most at 96% and takes 23 days.

What this meant to Trevan and I was that yes, our dreams will manifest in a certain and finite length of time, which can be sped up with more intensity of purpose… but too much too fast can also kill the majority of the potential yield.

Now, an onion is an interesting breed: at 34 degrees, it can take 136 days to germinate, and 90% of the seeds will sprout.

At 77 degrees, it can take only 4 days to germinate, and 97% will sprout. Raise the temperature to 95 degrees, and the time increases again, this time up to 13 days, but only 73% of the seeds will sprout.

Spinach:

  • 63 days at 32 degrees for 83%
  • 23 days at 41 degrees for 96%
  • 6 days at 86 degrees for 32%

Onions:

  • 136 days at 34 degrees for 90%
  • 4 days at 77 degrees for 97%
  • 13 days at 95 degrees for 73%

So how in the world can we know how much intensity we should be giving our dream-seeds? And how long do we have to wait for them to mature?

Too little intensity and the seedlings can die; too much, and again, they can die. Sometimes the seeds need attention, sometimes they need to be left alone. Do the wrong thing at the wrong time and you can kill the dream seed as easily as you can kill a vegetable seed.

With so many factors at play, the only thing you can do is relax, and let the seed grow.

Be passionate about it, and it is nourished. Force it to grow too soon, and you can break it. Be passionate and patient, all at the same time. Act on it when that little something inside of you nudges you to act. Seeds continue to grow without constant attention. In fact, they can even stand a little neglect if you return to them soon enough.

No, you might not know what the seed needs, but the Creator of all things knows His creation perfectly and will show you how to care for the seeds you’ve been given… even those dream seeds.

He’s a Master Gardener and you don’t have to be the one to know everything. It’s a delicate process which will certainly become clear to you as you go along, one step into the darkness at a time, which gratefully and mercifully becomes illuminated as you go. Originally published Aug 12, 2008

Natural Laws and the Laws of Thought

Our world is a world of order. It may not always seem that way, what with all those pesky humans creating such chaos, but the natural world is a world of order. There are certain things that can absolutely be depended upon.

Take gravity, for example. Gravity is a natural law. It is part of the order of this world. Gravity is the force that draws us to the earth. If an object of weight is dropped from a high location, it doesn’t just float in mid-air, it falls to the earth. Every. Single. Time. You can count on it.

But what if you don’t like gravity? Or what if someone doesn’t know about gravity? Do either of those situations make a person exempt from it? Of course not. It is a natural law that affects every single person on the earth, all the time, whether they know about it, or like it, or not.

BUT. Birds can fly. For centuries, humans watched birds in flight and desired the ability to fly. Leonardo DaVinci was fascinated with flight, and created a flying machine, but it was not workable with just human power. It was 1903 before the Wright Brothers conducted the first successful test of a flying machine that was human-powered and -controlled. Does the fact that birds–and now humans–can fly mean that the law of gravity is no longer valid? Was that somehow an untrue belief?

The reality is that birds are still subject to gravity. When they are not in flight, they aren’t floating off into space, after all. But there are other–additional–natural laws at work. Birds fly in accordance with natural laws, including gravity. As scientists experimented and tried to fly, they began to learn about other natural laws that made flight–human flight–possible. They were not defying or working against gravity, they were working WITH the natural laws to achieve something that had previously seemed impossible. They discovered that with the correct understanding, the impossible was not impossible at all.

Shoes, a ring, seashells, and $5000

Did you know?

The part of your brain that helps you achieve your goals, ISN’T the same part of your brain that sets the goals. I explain this in more detail in this video, where I talk about the subconscious mind and how it helps you (or keeps you from!) achieving your goals. But there is yet another part of your brain that has a different important role.

It’s called the Reticular Activating System (RAS), the entryway through which almost all data enters the brain, and which filters the information that comes in, having an effect on what gets your attention.

Think of it this way:

What if you need an opportunity—but you can’t see the one right in front of you? What if you need more customers—but you can’t think of that one incredibly effective thing you could do right now to reach them?

The answers we need are all around us.

The resources we lack aren’t as far away as we think. Everything we need is only an idea away; or in more scientific terms, your Reticular Activating System simply needs to be alerted to bring those ready-to-go ideas/resources/and people to your attention.

You’ve already experienced your RAS in action. Maybe you noticed that when you bought a car, suddenly that kind of car began showing up everywhere. Or, when you thought you invented a clever name for your child, pretty soon you started noticing other children all around you with the same name.

Sounds mysterious, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not as mysterious as you think.

While these kinds of experience may seem inexplicable, remember that the Universe operates very predictably based on a set of natural laws. The system was set up perfectly in the beginning, and it continues to run perfectly as planned. Almost like a computer program created to handle different scenarios in certain ways based upon the data input it receives. If X, then Y. If A, then B. Now that computers are such an integral part of our lives, we humans are beginning to understand how such a system could be structured and yet appear or feel so random.

You experience this every day.

The New York Times published the following story, which illustrates on the micro how simple a delivery-system like this can be, once it has been set up properly to begin with:

The shoes that Julie Matlin recently saw on Zappos.com were kind of cute, or so she thought. But Ms. Matlin wasn’t ready to buy and left the site.

Then the shoes started to follow her everywhere she went online. An ad for those very shoes showed up on the blog TechCrunch. It popped up again on several other blogs and on Twitpic. It was as if Zappos had unleashed a persistent salesman who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“For days or weeks, every site I went to seemed to be showing me ads for those shoes,’ said Ms. Matlin, a mother of two from Montreal. ‘It is a pretty clever marketing tool. But it’s a little creepy, especially if you don’t know what’s going on.” Helft, M. and Vega, T. (2010, Aug 29). Retargeting Ads Follow Surfers to Other Sites.

As this story illustrates, what shows up can absolutely be a result of the attention you gave something. Click on shoes, and they come back to your computer screen time and again, no matter what site you’re visiting. (In fact, this is exactly what is happening with me and a beautiful baguette ring I clicked on at the JC Penney website a few months ago. I’m not bothered… I think it’s gorgeous. It kind of makes me happy every time I see it. But I would remove the outer stones and only keep the center 5, and I’d put it on yellow gold, and I’m a size 5. In case anyone is wondering.)

So based on what you click on, your computer screen can very naturally become it’s own kind of vision board. Be careful to only click on the kinds of things you want in your life!

Computer software that uses targeted ads is just an example of how life itself works.

Based on what you think, your life begins to take new shape according to the nature of your thoughts. So only think on the kinds of things you want in your life! Think less about the parts you hate. Think more about the parts you love, and think lots about the way you want it to be.

What shows up in your life is very much a function of the thoughts you choose. Corresponding opportunities, people, and resources are brought to your attention in response. Don’t worry too much about the unwanted thoughts that pop in, just replace them as quickly as you can when they show up. And think often and emotionally on your hopes and dreams, because by the same kind of system that marketers use to target audiences, life will bring you the ideas, resources, and people you need to help you achieve them. It’s automatic, like a computer program.

And then expect to find those things! The expectation is what activates your RAS, so you’ll notice them and have a chance to engage with them when they arrive. In many cases those things are already right there, but you just haven’t noticed.

Here’s an example from one of my students of how this works in real life.

She wrote the following to my husband:

So, your wife is a genius! The book was incredible…I have a great story… I could not put the book down, finished it in just a few hours one night. I was at the beach with my kids the next day after I was done, and decided to test the theory. We belong to a beach club defined by huge rock jetties and good shells are hard to come by. We’ve never ever found a decent shell. Anyway, I walked down to the water and realized this was a great place to test…after all, no better place for the universe to be able to provide than the ocean!! So I put my energy on finding those big white gorgeous shells – we’ve never seen them anywhere near our beach. I imagined us all picking them and carrying loads back to the house… I reached down into the water and immediately pulled out a sand dollar – hmmm…

We walked the length of the beach, no shells. I did not let go of my focus. At the end, we went through the lagoon, and my kids climbed up on the last jetty. For the first time, they wanted to keep walking onto the next beach. They wanted to climb down the other side of the jetty and keep walking. At first I said “no” the jetty isn’t really safe to climb over, we could get hurt….blah, blah, blah…

Out of no where my youngest finds a small path that leads right over the jetty. We have never, ever noticed it before. We are now on the next beach, I go down to the water, and start pulling these huge white shells out of the water – bigger that we have ever seen. My kids are picking them up off of the sand…it was so weird! We had armfuls! OH MY GOSH. The jackrabbits had literally turned into shells! It was wild. I sat down dizzy at the experience, and then realized the power. Now, I’m working on doing this with bags of money…I picture myself walking into my back yard pulling up bags of money instead of weeds…hey, you never know!

Shells, check. But what about money?

She wrote again 2 Months Later…

Ok – so you may remember my first experience …after reading the Jackrabbit factor…the shells at the beach. Well, at the end I think I mentioned that I would like to attract bags of money…I have, and I am blown away. In early September I put out …that I would like to have $5,000 within three months. I was willing to work for it (should an opportunity present itself), but really, I just wanted the money to appear…hey, what the heck, one can dream. Well, my parents took us out to dinner this past Saturday evening as a celebration as they have recently come into some money from my Grandmother’s estate (she died in March). At the beginning of dinner my parents handed my brother and I checks for $20,000. Oh my gosh! I now put it out there …when I need about anything …the concept of scarcity is gone from my life…there is an abundance. Once again, thank you for the Jackrabbit Factor!!”

So have you tested it for yourself? Share your story here.

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation at Work

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation is one of the most powerful concepts I’ve ever learned for effecting significant life changes. Understand it, use it, and your desired improvements become predictable. It is a dependable law of nature as described in chapter one of Hidden Treasures: Heaven’s Astonishing Help with Your Money Matters (a free download).

Certified Mentor and Mindset Mastery Program Honors Graduate Robyn Young shares one of her experiences with the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. She writes:

Let’s break it down:

Perpetual: occurring continually, continuing forever

Trans- (prefix): so or such as to change or transfer

Mutation: a significant and basic alteration

In other words, continuing and ongoing change. The Law of Perpetual Transmutation states that everything is coming into or moving out of a physical form. It is evident in the physical world around us, such as in the water cycle. But it also pertains to thought: those thoughts that we give time, energy, and emotion to are the thoughts that will become physically manifest in our lives.

Early in our marriage, my husband decided that he wanted to attend graduate school in another state. At the time, we owned a home. We had purchased it with a federally subsidized loan that stipulated that this home had to be our primary residence. Since we were leaving the state, we had to sell it.

Although we planned to return after my husband’s graduate studies, we couldn’t rent the home out, or even leave it vacant for the 18 months we’d be gone. The housing market at that time was good, and homes in our area were selling, on average, in about four months. But by the time we were informed that my husband had been accepted into his graduate program, we were only two months away from the start of school. We had to sell the house faster than average.

It was possible, but would it happen for us?

Back then I knew nothing of the Law of Perpetual Transmutation. I didn’t know that having a dream and believing in the realization of it as if it had already happened would actually change the circumstances around me to be favorable to my desired outcome. But as a natural law, I did not have to understand it to be subject to it.

My husband and I did know, however, that if we were to accomplish this goal of selling our home, it would be because of our faith, not because of anything we could do to make our home sell in a specific period of time. We did what things were in our control—we beautified the yard and the interior, and we hired a realtor to sell for us.

The day we hired our realtor I actually struggled with that decision. I knew I was relinquishing control of the situation to someone who did not feel the same urgency about selling my home that I did. Mine was not the only home she was responsible to sell. I felt I had to do everything in my power for this dream to become reality, but would my agent work as hard as I would have?

I remember the realization that while I could not control the situation directly, I could increase my efforts to do the things I believed God wanted me to be doing. So I increased the frequency and sincerity of my prayers. I studied the scriptures every day. I served in my church, making special efforts to do my best with the assignments I had been given. And I believed.

Sometimes a negative thought would pop into my mind: “What if it doesn’t sell? Then what?” But I knew. My husband had a good job. If we couldn’t sell our home, we’d just stay. We liked our life as it was. It would be okay.

But after having those thoughts, I knew, I KNEW in my gut that the house would sell. So my “negative” moments always ended with, “But it will sell.” And I knew it would.

Four weeks before we left for graduate school, we closed on the sale of our home. The entire process had taken only one month. Although I knew nothing of the laws of prosperity, I knew that the work that had happened in our minds was a key part of what had happened in our lives. And now I know that believing in the idea, holding it there, and trusting God to take care of the things I could not control was exactly what I needed to do so that our dream could manifest itself in a physical form.

It was the Law of Perpetual Transmutation at work.

#23: Mysterious Connections, Uncanny Coincidences

Successful goal achievers learn to rely on unseen help, mysterious connections, and uncanny coincidences to help them accomplish their goals. How do these events come about?

How can you activate this help in your own life? How can you know that the help is there, and what can YOU do to participate in those kinds of miracles?

In this podcast (recorded in 2014), I explain why I didn’t like Vision Boards. My feelings have evolved about them over time (I use them now for longer-term goals), but the tool I describe on the podcast continues to be a powerful asset for effective short-and long-term goal achievement.

Parked, or Rolling Toward Your Goal?

Ten years ago I sent a broadcast inviting those who had read The Jackrabbit Factor (and who had seen amazing things happen as a result) share their success story with Oprah. Most of the responses I received were enthusiastic and supportive. However, a few (who admitted they hadn’t read the book) responded with a question:

“If you practice what you preach, shouldn’t you just put the intention ‘out to the Universe’ and let it deliver what you’re asking for, without asking your readers to help you?”

Fair question. But remember, the key to putting the principles to work is that once you know what you want, you must see it in your mind as though you already have it, FEEL the victory now, and then when an idea comes to do something, you must ACT.

So that’s why I sent out the invitation. Not because being on Oprah was the goal, but rather because I thought that being on Oprah might take me a step closer to the goal. Being on Oprah was never “the goal.” It was not a destination. The ultimate goal was the vision I had for my family, and the positive difference I hoped to make for other families across the globe. Naturally, I knew that being on her show wasn’t the only way for me to achieve my goal, but I acted on the thought anyway, because that was the idea that showed up.

Taking action can be scary

By suggesting that my readers contact Oprah.com to share their stories and recommend my book for her show, I risked ridicule, judgement, and a possible flurry of unsubscribes. Taking action is scary, and yet I’ve discovered that action it’s necessary, and the fear is normal.

(I’ve also learned that having people unsubscribe is not a bad thing. I prefer to surround myself with like-minded people, so if I ever say something that turns someone off, I wish them well and know that they will find what they are looking for elsewhere.)

So to reiterate: When you set a goal, you must act.

Act where you are

I’ve also learned that no matter where I’m at now, or where I’m trying to go, I can only act on my present surroundings, like the acorn in the ground. The acorn does not need to act on the nutrients that are still three feet away; it must act on the nutrients in the ground that are already in contact with it. In time, as it grows roots, it will be able to connect with other needed elements a few inches away, and then a few feet away, and beyond; but it all begins with simply taking action right where it is.

As Wallace Wattles taught in Chapter 11 of The Science of Getting Rich:

“Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. You cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.

“Because you are not in the right business, or the right environment now, do not think that you must postpone action until you get into the right business or environment. And do not spend time in the present taking thought as to the best course in possible future emergencies; have faith in your ability to meet any emergency when it arrives.

“If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective.

“Put your whole mind into present action.

“…Act now. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin now. And your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment, and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment. You cannot act where you are not; you cannot act where you have been, and you cannot act where you are going to be; you can act only where you are.

“…Do not wait for a change of environment, before you act; get a change of environment by action. You can so act upon the environment in which you are now, as to cause yourself to be transferred to a better environment. Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in the better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.

“…Do not feel discouraged, or sit down and lament because you are misplaced. No man was ever so misplaced but that he could not find the right place, and no man ever became so involved in the wrong business but that he could get into the right business.

“Hold the vision of yourself in the right business, with the purpose to get into it, and the faith that you will get into it, and are getting into it; but ACT in your present business. Use your present business as the means of getting a better one, and use your present environment as the means of getting into a better one. Your vision of the right business, if held with faith and purpose, will cause the Supreme to move the right business toward you; and your action, if performed in the Certain Way, will cause you to move toward the business.”

My invitation to my readers that day was just one of those ideas that showed up, and sending the invitation out was simply acting on my present surroundings.

You don’t have to act on EVERY idea

While some of my readers did contact her company, other readers offered additional ideas:

One suggested I send her producers a book. Another suggested I go to New York and meet with a bunch of media representatives.

Although these suggestions may be something I will do at some point, at the time it didn’t feel right. And frankly, ten years later, being on Oprah no longer carries the appeal to me that it once did, and I’ve found that I can achieve my ultimate goals in so many other ways by simply acting right where I am.

So what was the outcome of my acting on that thought? Who knows! Maybe someone on her staff learned about the book and maybe it helped them. I never got a phone call, and that’s okay. At the very least it gave me an opportunity to experiment with, and write about, the principle of acting where you are.

I knew that if it was truly in harmony with my ultimate goals, it would come together at the right time. That it did not happen when I wanted it to did not prevent me from making progress in other ways. Even now, I continue to maintain a clear mental picture of how I am building my life to be, and will continue acting on the suitable ideas that come to me as they come.

Understand this:

God knows best how to bring your vision about, but He still expects you to move your feet.

After all, you can’t steer a parked car.

So what about you? What are your goals? Are you at least rolling, even if you’re not sure you’re headed in the right direction?

Do your best to act where you are to achieve your worthy objectives, and keep the thought: “Please nudge me in another direction if I’m wrong!” in the back of your mind. So long as you are at least rolling, God can steer you.

And if you go one way and discover that you need to turn a corner or make a U-turn, it’s not the end of the world. We will all make mistakes along the way, but remaining frozen is probably the worst mistake of all.
